Ferguson Builders Ltd awarded for Jacks Point build in Southern Region Master Builders Awards Evening.

Proudly positioned at the base of The Remarkables mountains, this Lakes District design mimics the landscape’s high ridges and sharp angles.

Conceived as a fairly simple but dramatic building shape, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home is split into two wings. The two-storey south wing houses the garage and sleeping domains. The single-storey north wing embraces the living spaces.

Standout interior features include 5m-high ceilings in the open-plan area. An off-centre gable gives this space a unique outlook, peeking at the peaks. A stone feature wall adds down-to-earth charm behind the log burner.

Timber clad in natural weathering vertical larch, the exterior will respond to the climate, allowing the home to settle further into the landscape. Local schist borders the house, providing material and structural solidity.

The home is designed as a functional, modern living space that exists in harmony with its beautiful setting.

Viewing corridors mean glimpses of the gorgeous landscape can be admired from almost every room in the house.

Cons:
For me, wood burners are obviously a lot messier of an option than something like a gas fire. Soot, ash, woodchips etc can be annoying for the clean freak or mildly OCD member of the family like myself.

Log storage- could perhaps be an issue? There are so many great ideas for incorporating this in your house these days though and you don’t need to look far on pinterest to find inspiration for this. We decided on a riased fire box on top of a concrete slab so as to store the wood underneath the fire, but this is just one of many. (See below)

Many of the cons of a wood burner fire are no loger cons we need to consider thanks to the improvements made with energy efficiency and the design to avoid a lot of the flaws tha they used to include, such as drafts and negative efficiency.
